The Antwerp Cathedral / Cathédrale d'Anvers

The tower of the Antwerp cathedral rises 123m above the city and the Scheldt. Tjis is the largest church in the Low Countries, and 16.000 people may gather here for religious services. When Peeter Appelmans designed the towers in 1430 (of which only one was completed), he could not have imagined the fantastic period of tower building that was starting. The designs were so ambitious that the building of the Church of Our Lady in Antwerp, of St. Michaels in Brussels, and of St. Rombout's in Mechelen took more than 300 years.

D'une hauteur de 123 m, la tour de la cathédrale d'Anvers domine la ville et l'Escaut. Cette église, la plus grande des anciens Pays-Bas, peut accueillir 16.000 fidèles aux cérémonies religieuses. Lorsque, en 143, l'architecte Peeter Appelmans conçut les tours (dont une seule fut achevée), il ne pouvait prévoir qu'il inaugurait une fantastique période de construction de tours! Les projets étaient si nombreux et si imposants que la construction de l'église Notre-Dame à Anvers, Saint-Michel à Bruxelles et Saint-Rombaut à Malines dura plus de 300 ans.
